Reach out- People do care

What is Critical Incident Stress Management?  As the name implies CISM is best described as an immediate intervention to promote stress management after someone (or group of people) has experienced a critical incident.  Critical incidents are those in which a person, or group of people, experience an event that upsets their usual balance of thinking and emotions.  When looking at what CISM is it is also important to understand what CISM is NOT. CISM is not psychotherapy, it is not a long term treatment system, it is not an investigation of an accident or incident.

Who is in need of a CISM?  Anyone can request a CISM.  CISM is useful for groups of people that have been affected by a traumatic event.  It is important to reach out for help immediately.  The less time between the event and the beginning of CISM the better.  CISM is most effective when it is begun within the first few hours after the event.  For incidents in the Valdez area a CISM team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  There is no charge assessed for the work of the CISM team.

Why would I consider requesting a CISM?  It?s simple, everyone needs help at sometime in their lives.  It?s important, because early intervention is always preferable.  Instead of waiting to see how bad it gets take steps now to get help.  Stress reactions can manifest in many ways.  There are physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral and spiritual reactions to the stress brought on by a traumatic event.  With understanding and support these reactions pass more quickly.

When should a CISM be requested?  Timing is an important function for a CISM to work at its best.  There are several steps involved in a CISM.  The closer in time to the event that has triggered the need for a CISM the better.

Where will a CISM take place?  The location for a CISM is based primarily on the location of the incident.  For the Valdez area we have many options for where to hold a CISM.  The team will meet with those in need in a location that is incident specific.  We will decide the location for the CISM with you when you contact us.
